An analysis on the Treatment needs of periodontal disease of residents in Gwangju & Chunnam Province



Abstract
To investigate the periodontal status over 15-year-old residents, this study was conducted with a total of 1,510 subjects living in Gwangju and Chunnam Province using the community periodontal index of treatment need(CPITN) necessary for the supply of treatment for the whole citizens of a community or a certain human groups. CPINT based upon the clinical assessment of 10 index teeth with a specially designed periodontal probe.

The results were as follows;

1. In urban area, the mean number of sextants with the healthy periodontal condition was 2.0 as highest score, while in rural area the mean number of sextants with calculus was 1.93 as highest score.
2. In urban area, the mean number of sextants with the healthy periodontal condition was highest score in subjects aged less than 29 and had the mean number of sextants with calculus was highest score in subjects aged over 30, while in rural area, the subjects aged less than 19 had healthy periodontal condition as highest score, the subjects whose aged from 20 to 29 had the bleeding periodontal tissues as highest score and the subjects aged over 30 had calculus forming periodontal tissue as highest score.
3. The percentage of subjects with calculus was 47.24% in urban and 43.28% as highest score, respectively.
4. In the subjects aged less than 15, the percentage of subjects with the bleeding was 38.03% in urban area and the percentage of subjects with healthy periodontal condition was 48.6% in rural area as highest score. While in the subjects from 15 to 64, the percentage of subjects with calculus was highest score and the subjects the subjects aged more than 65 proved to be the highest in terms of shallow periodontal pockets.
